Gout is a phenomenal among man. It will cause you excruciating pain.
Your toes will be the first organ on your body to swell. Gout is a form of arthritis and a rheumatic disease.
What caused Gout?
When crystallized Uric Acid are deposited in your joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues caused by over production or high level of uric acid in your blood known as Hyperuricemia.
Hyperuricemia indicate the risk of gout but the relationship between hyperuricemia and gout is unclear.
You can have gout even though your uric acid levels are normal or low and other person with hyperuricemia does not show any symptoms or develop gout.
What caused over production of Uric Acid?
Diet - Food you eat that contain Purines such as alcohol (beer), meat, and seafood.
Genetics – Hereditary (not proven but a suspect)
Underexcretion of urate – The inability of your kidney to excrete urate salts of uric acid.
What foods contain Purines?
High purines foods: Category includes liver, mincemeat, sardines, mussels, kidney, anchovies, mackerel, herring, sardines, gravies, sweetbreads, brains and other organ meats.
Very high purines food: Category include lamb, lima beans, chicken, cauliflower, bouillon, beef, bacon, crab, goose, halibut, duck, ham, lobster, mutton, oatmeal, oysters, pork, sheep, rabbit, spinach, tripe, veal, venison, tuna, trout, shellfish, salmon, peas, kidney beans, carp and calf tongue.
What happen to your Kidney?
Your kidney will release Uric Acid through urination.
Due to some inability, your kidneys are unable to release uric acid fast enough.
What are the symptoms of Gout?
The symptons of Gout are; swelling, tenderness, redness and sharp pain in your toes.
Normally all these things happen at night, during the night or by morning you will feel the pain.
How Gout can be treated?
The aim of Gout treatment is to prevent an acute attack.
Repeated attacks can be prevented by using different drugs to reduce the uric acid levels.
To reduce pain, you can apply a pack of ice on affected area for 20 to 30 minutes several times a day.
For acute treatment include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs), colchicine and steroids are used.
While for prevention, options include allopurinol, febuxostat and probenecid.
By lowering your uric acid levels you can cure the disease.
Treatment for existing disorder is important.
Nsaids
Nsaids are the usual first-line treatment for gout.
You can see improvement within 4 hours of treatment and is recommended for the first 2 weeks.
Indomethacin has been the most commonly used Nsaids, alternatively ibuprofen, may be preferred due to its better side effect properties.
Nsaids are not recommended for those with underlying health problems such as gastrointestinal bleeding, renal failure, or heart failure.
Colchicine
Colchicine is an alternative for those unable to take NSAIDs.
Because of its gastrointestinal upset side effects, colchicine is less used.
However the side effect can be reduced by lowering the dosage.
Steriods
Glucocorticoids are found to be as effective as Nsaids and may be used if Nsaids are less suitable due to existing health problems.
Glucocorticoids can improve the condition when injected into your joint this will able to reduce the risk of joint infection.
How to prevent Gout from happening?
Limit your intake of foods high in purines especially beer (alcohol), meat and seafood.
Purines are converted into uric acid by your body that is why purines rich foods should be avoided.
Beer reduces uric acid levels in the blood and contribute to dehydration and also precipitate acute gout attacks.
Always eat a healthy diet that provides you with nutrients you need and helps you control your weight.
Weight reduction helps you in lowering your risk of recurring of gout attacks.
This is best accomplished by reducing your dietary fat and calorie intake, follow by a regular aerobic exercise program.
Drink plenty of water and other fluids, liquid helps your body to get rid of uric acid.
Adequate fluid intake can decrease your risk of kidney stone formation when you have gout.
