Consuming cherry extract may reduce the occurrence of gout by 45 percent.
Eating both fresh cherry and cherry extract lowers the occurrence of gout by 35 percent.
The biggest reduction is when you eat cherry while taking anti-gout medication Allpurinol, they can reduce the occurrence of gout by 75 percent.
According to Dr Allan Gelber who co-wrote the editorial in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism accompanying the study with Professor Zhang Yuqing from Boston University School of Medicine explained that Vitamin C in cherries influence the production of uric acid in your body as one of the reasons why cherry is able to reduce the occurrence of gout.
But he caution that the study does not proved that cherries alone prevent gout attack and that you should continue with your current gout medication.
Gout happens when uric acid crystal built up in your joint.
Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines.
Purines are substances found naturally in your body and also contain in food such as organ meats, anchovies, mushrooms and certain seafood.
The researchers discovered that eating cherries over a two days period decreases 35 percent of the risk of having gout attack during that period compare to not eating any cherries.
